Looking for a well built reasonably priced cruising boat that won't break the bank but can't find a marina with slips available to dock? Here's your answer, a 25 foot pocket trawler with optional motor sail rig with 8' 6" beam that you can trailer anywhere without need for wide load permits. Park and dry store at home if you have space in your yard or rent space at any RV storage lot if you don't, and launch at any launch ramp. La Dolce Vita, Italian for "The Sweet Life" has been featured in the February/March 2020 issue of BoatU.S. magazine. Want to explore the San Juans and/or the Gulf Islands but don't have the time to get there by water because it's too far away? No problem, just trailer up to Anacortes, Bellingham, Oak Harbor, Blaine, or other suitable locations and launch from there. It's an easy day's run out to Friday Harbor, Roche Harbor or any of several docks and anchorages in the San Juan Islands. The trailer it comes with is a well maintained heavy duty aluminum tandem axle with torsion bar suspension and Kodiak disc surge brakes, so rust from frequent salt water immersion is not an issue. Can be towed with any pickup, van, or SUV with rated towing capacity of 6,000 pounds or greater. You will find no other cruising boat of similar size at any price with better fuel economy than an Albin 25, using a half gallon per hour of diesel fuel or less at 6.5 knots. Much safer than gasoline.
That said, as with all boats there are compromises. Phenomenal fuel economy comes at the cost of speed. This is a full displacement, non-planing hull with speed limited by waterline length. Sailboaters know this. But there is something to be said for life in the slow lane. Another compromise in this case is primarily with size. Accommodations are comparable to a small camper trailer or van. Conventional settees in the main cabin convert to a comfortable double V berth with 4 inch thick foam cushions. The galley to port has a sink and faucet, safe non-flaring two burner Origo non-pressure alcohol stove, and plenty of storage for dishes, flatware, pots, and pans. An enclosed head to starboard is equipped with a Groco marine toilet with 20 gallon holding tank. The center co*ckpit is fully enclosed and sheltered against cold and foul weather, consisting of a wheelhouse with two person driver seat at the helm, a pair of sailboat style bench seats convertible to a dining area. The rear half of the co*ckpit has a canvas enclosure with side and rear windows that can be folded forward for open air seating in fair weather. The aft cabin is quite small with sitting head room. It was designed as a family weekend cruiser with the aft cabin as a place for children to hang out and sleep in a pair of quarter berths that extend under the co*ckpit bench seats. We found it suitable as storage space for luggage, extra fenders, PFDs, etc. Our record for consecutive days afloat in the San Juans and Gulf Islands was 46 days, with a mix of anchoring out and overnight docking in transient marina slips where we could take showers and do laundry. We never felt cramped or claustrophobic.
As owners since 2014 we have cruised this boat in the San Juans, Gulf Islands, BC Sunshine Coast, and Desolation Sound in the Pacific Northwest, Catalina Island in Southern California, Erie Canal, Long Island Sound and Chesapeake Bay in the East, all by trailering over the road to those various locations. Albin 25 boats are legendary with active online owner groups both in the US an BC, Canada. With a reputation for excellent build quality, the Albin 25 along with the Albin Vega 27 sailboat are the only ones of several Albin models actually built in Sweden with strict quality control and imported to North America.
