The City of Kenosha and Kenosha Unified School District have announced a new collaborative effort to transfer five school properties from the district to the city and one from the city to the district.
The effort was unveiled Friday afternoon.
This initiative aims to help redevelop these properties for community benefit, including the potential development of new affordable housing, according to a prepared joint statement.
The buildings will become available at the end of the 2023-24 Kenosha Unified school year due to the rightsizing project KUSD completed following years of declining enrollment.
“This transfer represents a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to revitalize and improve our city,” said Mayor David Bogdala. “By transforming these properties, we can provide much-needed affordable housing options for our residents, enhancing the quality of life and fostering a sense of community.”

KUSD Superintendent Jeff Weiss expressed similar sentiments.
“We have been working closely with the city to determine what to do with the buildings that will be left vacant following school closures,” Weiss said. “At the end of the day, these are major decisions with impact well beyond our district, and we want to be sure that we make all decisions in the best interest of our community, and I believe that is the direction we are heading.”
The six locations identified for transfer are:
KTEC West (former McKinley Middle School), 5710 32nd Ave., to the city;
McKinley Elementary, 5520 52nd Ave., to the city;
Jefferson Elementary, 1832 43rd St., to the city;
Jefferson Annex (Kenosha eSchool), 1808 41st Place, to the city;
Washington Middle School (current site), 811 Washington Road, to the city;
KTEC East (former Lincoln Elementary School), 6811 18th Ave., to KUSD.
The properties present “unique opportunities for redevelopment in various ways,” according to the prepared statement.
The City of Kenosha plans to work with local developers, community organizations and residents to help create a redevelopment plan that aligns with the community’s needs and priorities.
Key objectives include developing affordable housing; creating multi-purpose community spaces; fostering economic growth; and the creation of more space for essential facilities, such as parking and playgrounds that enhance that overall learning environment.
Both the KUSD School Board and Kenosha City Council will review the agreement in late summer for final approval.
