1. Let's get musical at The Bark
The Ska-slinging punkrock band Chilled Monkey Brains returns to Tallahassee in support of its 3rd full length vinyl album "Back to the Mud," along with locals Medians, Subpotent and Pineapple Tuesday, for a show Friday, Sept. 13, at The Bark, 507 All Saints St. Doors open at 8 p.m., show is at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 advance, $12 day of show; all ages. North Florida's Once Great Estate plans a headbanging hoedown for its Night of Horns at The Bark on Saturday with Embittered and Peak Dive for a music mashup of Americana, indie pop and metal. Doors open at 8 p.m. $10 cover. The band released its second full-length album, "Goodbye Cody Scarp," in May.
2. TSO opens season with 'Joy!'
Visiting conductor Conner Gray Covington’s season opener for Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra channels the essence of joy through music at 7:30 p.m. Friday with the concert at Ruby Diamond Concert Hall. Tickets are $35-$64; visit tallahasseesymphony.org.
Composer Quinn Mason wrote "A Joyous Trilogy" in hopes of creating a piece that is the “very embodiment of happiness and cheerfulness, an accessible work that would put any listener in a good mood.” Following this is Mozart’s exquisite "Exsultate Jubilate" (‘Exult, Rejoice!’), featuring the voice of soprano of Amy Owens. Dvořák’s 8th Symphony closes out Covington’s program.
3. The Artist Series opens with Manhattan Chamber
The Artist Series of Tallahassee announces its 30th Anniversary Concert Season of six shows opening at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, in Opperman Music Hall on FSU campus.
The first concert will feature the Manhattan Chamber Players, piano quartet, featuring Brendan Speltz, violin; Luke Fleming, viola; Brook Speltz, cello; and David Fung, piano. The Manhattan Chamber Players are a chamber music collective of New York-based musicians who share the common aim of performing the greatest works in the chamber repertoire at the highest level.
Other concerts include: Amadi Azikiwe, violin & viola and Read Gainsford, piano (Oct. 27); Raleigh Ringers, bell choir (Nov. 15); Vega Quartet, string quartet, Artist-in-Residence (Jan. 19); and Duo Beaux Arts, four-hand piano (March 9).

4. Pick FAMU's Grape Harvest Festival
Florida A&M University's Center for Viticulture and Small Fruit Research is gearing up for its annual Grape Harvest Festival on Saturday, Sept. 14, with a full day of events planned from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. at FAMU Center for Viticulture, 6361 Mahan Drive. Parking is available at the Antique Car Museum, 6800 Mahan Drive, will be open at 7:30 a.m. Complementary Shuttles to festival grounds every 10-15 minutes. Register at famu.edu/grapefest.
Festival highlights include a Health Fair and Exhibits, Fresh Fruit Grape Varietals Tasting, Guided Vineyard Trailer Rides; Fitness Demonstration Sessions; Grape Throwing Competition; Hula Hoop Competition; Wine Making Workshop (1st and 2nd session – main building back patio). The festival Opening Ceremony will be from 10:30-11 a.m.; the U-Pick Grape Gift Bag Experience from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; Grape Stomping Competition (10 teams X 4 members) from 11:30 a.m.-noon; and Wine and Cheese Tasting Experience from 1-2:30 p.m.
5. Musical forces come together for Kirtan at Eastside Unity
Chris Seepersaud’s Kirtan at Unity Eastside, 8551 Buck Lake Road, set for 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, is actually historic. It will be the first Kirtan to have a musical army performing, classical singers from North and South India, sitar, harmonium, bass, drumset all in one.
The event will occur at sunset, clearing the mind with music and mantra. All are welcome, no creed or dogma is at work, simply sound, vibration, and loving intent. Musical stars of the evening include Chris Skene of Revival, Shanice Richards of the Little Mercies, Reo Morris and Jack Straub.
Seepersaud brings all of his musical powers into one space, with the help of his talented friends, to deliver an experience leaving you happier than when you came in. Jeff Saulich, better known as Jeffji will join Seep as an experienced musician of the Tallahassee Kirtan tradition.
Bonus event: Songwriters gather at Blue Tavern
Pickfoolery kicks off happy hour at Blue Tavern, 120 N. Monroe St., from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, with pickin' and singin' by local bluegrass legend Butch Burns and friends from the Bottom Dollar Boys. Songwriters in the Round step up from 8-10:30 p.m. with host Daniel Craig. This month, it's gonna be a wall-to-wall TearBeerPalooza with Greg Brown, Pat Puckett and Hugh Roche. Get ready for some twang and heart songs. $5 cover.
The 2nd Saturday Old Time Jam, hosted by Gordon and Jane Scott, gets cranking at 4 p.m. for players and music lovers. Stick around for a triple-header at 7 p.m. with John R. Butler, Terror Pigeon & Blue Darlin'. Butler, one of Florida's favorite songwriters, is best known for his cult hit "Hand of the Almighty." Terror Pigeon plays dance songs and Blue Darlin' (Banjo player Jessica Bellaire of Tallahassee and fiddler Julius Bjornson of Baltimore) brings a taste of traditional Appalachia to life with deep-cut instrumental duets and two-part vocal harmonies. $10 cover.
Bonus event: Hispanic Heritage Month
Leon County Government celebrates the achievements and contributions of Hispanic Americans during Hispanic Heritage Month with exhibits, a virtual author talk (Silvia Moreno-Garcia, 7 p.m. Oct. 9), and resources from the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library. Thematic book lists and movie watchlists offer the opportunity to learn about the inspiring Hispanic American men and women who helped shape our community and the world. Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated each year from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.
Cultura Tallahassee: The Beauty of Our Heritage opens from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Northeast Branch Library with local artists and light refreshments. The exhibit runs through Oct. 14 at four library locations – the Bruce J. Host Northeast Branch Library, Dr. B.L. Perry, Jr. Branch Library, Eastside Branch Library, and Jane G. Sauls Ft. Braden Branch Library.
At La Florida, a 2nd Saturday with the Museum of Florida History program, explore how descendants of Spanish-speaking countries have shaped the culture and history of Florida from 11 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Eastside Branch Library.
Bonus Event: Catch Easy Honey at 926 Bar
Easy Honey of Charleston, South Carolina, brings its "Cupidity Unlimited Album Release Tour" to 926 Bar and Grill, 926 W. Tharpe St., at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19. Known for its catchy tunes and infectious energy, indie surf rock band Easy Honey is on a 6 month tour. The band’s tour follows sold-out shows in NYC, DC, Atlanta, Boone, and Charleston. The group is fronted by Jennifer Parks, a New Orleans transplant who provides the vocals, and saxophone, alongside veterans Erik Luoma (guitar), Chip Mikell (bass), Don Gormly (keys and harmonica), Bill Landing (sax), and Jeff Sumerall (percussion).
