Gaining respect and influencing others requires a relationship. I’ve heard that “respect is earned” and I have even said those words. But when respect is given by those in charge, it will be returned. Imagine respect was like a pocket full of coins we all carried around. If you wanted someone to trust, believe, buy-in to your ideas, first, you have to give up a few of those coins. Invest those in your team, listen to their feedback, concerns, complaints and ideas. Then, enact small changes to win them over.The next time you need something from those individuals, you’ll have some credibility and can expect that same level of respect be returned.In short, if you want to be respected, you have to give respect. You don’t get genuine respect because of your title, you get it through sacrifice and trust.
